Iceland

The weather can be unpredictable on this small but mighty island nation. Be prepared to be flexible, including changing your plans day-to-day. That being said, Iceland in June is a green, outdoors paradise, including some of the best hiking we have ever done. Enjoy breathtaking waterfalls, volcanos, geysers, and the island's famous Blue Lagoon. We packed a ton into 4 days in Iceland and could have stayed at least another week.

Things To-Do

Reykjavík and Blue Lagoon: Don't just fly in and out of this capital city. We recommend taking a walking tour, enjoying a meal at a foodie market, and maybe even seeing a bit of the strange. Right outside the City is Iceland's famous Blue Lagoon. This pricey experience was unique but if you're short on cash, we would say skip it because it's quite commercial and filled with only tourists.

Drive the Golden Circle: Starting at Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall that you can walk behind, drive Iceland's famous Golden Circle. We stopped at Gullfoss, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Thingvellir National Park.

Skógafoss Waterfall & Fimmvörðuháls Hike: Fimmvörðuháls is an epic, "must do," Iceland hike featuring over two dozen waterfalls. You can either complete the full hike, beginning at Skógafoss, and arrange for a ride back to your car, or, hike it as an out-and-back, turning around when you're ready. We have hiked all over the world, and this definitely makes the top 5 all-time hikes.

Hike a Volcano: One thing to remember is that Iceland's weather is very unpredictable. We had plans to hike a glacier but the tour was canceled due to high winds. Instead, we hiked Mt. Fagradalsfjall merely weeks before a series of significant volcanic eruptions. Turns out the smoldering rock we saw was ready to blow! After our hike, we made our way through Iceland's countryside to Reykjavik where we spent a rainy afternoon exploring this City museums and other sightseeing highlights.

Where We Stayed

Iceland Farmhouse: The photo at the top of this page was taken from our AirBnB. This updated farmhouse was perfect for our group of 5. The rural location made for a slightly longer drive each day but it was well worth it. We loved the authentic Iceland experience and rich history that came with this gem of a place.
