Summary. This 3.2 mile hike is short enough for younger kids but challenging enough to satisfy the avid hiker. Starting at the Bunny Flats parking lot (restrooms available), the hike takes up above the tree line to Horse Camp, where the Shasta Alpine Lodge sits. In some years, the trail can be still covered in snow even in July. No dogs are permitted on the trail.
Getting there. From the central Mt. Shasta exit, head north on Mt. Shasta Blvd to E. Lake Street. Follow until it becomes N Washington Dr which turns into Hwy 10/Everitt Memorial Highway. Follow until Bunny Flats parking lot. Restrooms are available at this parking lot. The trailhead is immediately right of the restrooms. Follow the well-marked trail up to Horse Camp.
Photo above taken on the way back to the parking lot. As you approach Horse Camp, the trail does get fairly steep for a short stretch.
During heavy snow years, the trail will still be covered in snow when you near Horse Camp.
At Horse Camp restrooms are available, as well as a natural spring tap that quite literally has the best tasting water we've ever had.
