Mt. Shasta, California: Castle Crags State Park

Updated: Mar 20, 2021

Summary. Castle Crags State Park is located just outside of Mt. Shasta, right off I-5. The Pacific Coast Trail (PCT) runs through this 4000 acre park. We hiked the Crags Trail to Castle Dome, a 5.2 mile strenuous but rewarding hike with over 2000 ft in elevation gain.

From the parking lot, the trail starts on a shady, uphill but steady climb.

When you come out from under the canopy, the trail becomes difficult - quickly. There is a steep climb with rock and no shade. At one point, you have to carefully scramble across large boulders (probably not good for little kids). When you eventually reach the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking almost 360 degree views. The rock formations are pretty incredible too.

This is a challenging hike and because of some of the dicey sections with sheer drops, it's probably not good for younger kids. However, if you're up for the challenge, getting to the top is super rewarding. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
