Sedona, Arizona: Cathedral Rock Hike

Summary. Sedona is the home of some of the best hiking opportunities. Gorgeous vistas featuring Sedona's red rock formations are virtually at every turn. One of the hikes we enjoyed was to Cathedral Rock. Short but mighty, this hike involves a rock climb and amazing red rock views as your reward. Hiking here no-cost activity is best in the morning to avoid the heat or crowds. Most trails are marked well. Bring layers, lots of water, and proper sun protection as weather can change dramatically and there is virtually no cover.

Getting there. This short hike is located just 10 minutes outside of Sedona. Take AZ-179-S to Back O Beyond Road until you reach the well-marked parking lot.

Hike. From the parking lot, the hike, roundtrip is just 1.5 miles. However, one you get to the base of Cathedral Rock, it's really only for those comfortable with scrambling up rock. The lower section is easier and available for most kids to climb. Once you reach the very last section of the climb, though, you need to feel comfortable with rock climbing, albeit fairly easy rock climbing.

From the top. After completing the most difficult little stretch of climbing, turn around and catch the views below. They are gorgeous.

This little hike is great for those looking for an adventure, but on a short timeline. It also makes a great add if you have time for multiple hikes in one day.
